Rabbeinu Yaakov ben Rabbi Yehuda - the Mahari Weill, one of the greatest Poskim in Ashkenaz of all generations. Lived and operated in the 15th century. In his youth he studied with the forefather of the Ashkenazic customs Rabbeinu Yaakov Moelin - the Maharil and in the yeshiva of Rabbi Zalman Ronkel of Mainz. In 1429, he was appointed the Rav of Augsburg, where he fearlessly led the community and where he taught his greatest disciples Rabbi Yosef Ben Moshe author of the Leket Yosher and Rabbi Avraham Katzenellbogen. Due to a governmental decree, the Jews of Augsburg were deported  and Rabbi Yaakov was appointed the Rav of the Erfurt community, which was one of the largest communities in Ashkenaz.
