From Tel Aviv to Antwerp through Warsaw, Berlin, the Czechoslovakia and Paris: Rare Items from a Motorcycle Trip of Members of Maccabi before the First Maccabiah - 1930 - A Touching Historical Affair
From Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to Antwerp through Warsaw, Berlin, the Czech Republic and Paris - a trip on motorcycles of 10 members of Maccabi from the Land of Israel to Belgium through Jewish communities in Europe. 1930.
An amazing photograph album, the cloth flag from the journey, three "golden" certificates of excellence of one of the participants with important signatures of personalities that accompanied the journey.

About the trip
In 1911, Fritz Avraham published for the first time the idea of Jewish Olympic games. Yosef Yekutieli, one of the leaders of Maccabi in the Land of Israel, implemented the idea and the first Maccabiah was scheduled for 1932, marking 1800 years to the Bar Kokhba Revolt.
The desire to spur Jews abroad to participate in the Maccabiah led to the idea of a motorcycle trip throughout Europe. The members of the Maccabi delegation from the Land of Israel left Israel on 04.06.1930 to a conference of Maccabi in Antwero (03-07.07.1930).
On their way, they visited various Jewish communities, several years before their destruction in the Holocaust: Germany (Leipzig, Breslau, Koln, Frankfurt, Berlin), Poland (Warsaw, Lvov, Poznan, Lodz), Romania (Czernowitz, Bucharest, Constantza) France (Paris), Czechoslovakia (Kassa), Turkey (Constantinople) and Syria. In all these places they took pictures and were photographed.
The leaders of the Yishuv were most enthusiastic and supportive. The delegation left Tel Aviv and Meir Dizengoff signed the certificates of excellence. In order to honor Jerusalem, on the certificates it was written "From Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to Antwerp".
The trip was a success and a year later another trip was organized - to London.

About Maccabi
The Maccabi Federation of Israel is the oldest among the sports organizations in Israel and was the major factor in the development of Jewish sport in the Land of Israel during the British Mandate and later, the State of Israel.
On 29.12.1912 the Maccabi Federation of Israel was founded at the Herzliya Hebrew Gymnasium by 33 representatives of 10 different unions from various places in Israel. The values Maccabi supported were the Hebrew language, Hebrew work, Hebrew safeguarding. Its slogan was "A healthy mind in a healthy body".
The Maccabi Federation of Israel was part of the Maccabi World Union. The Union was founded in 1895 in Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey due to anti-Semitism" a group of Jewish athletes that wanted to join a local sports club was rejected due to it being a Jewish group. The group then decided to found a Jewish sports club, which was most successful. In its footsteps, several other sports clubs were founded throughout Europe in Vienna, Berlin, Prague and more. From Europe, the movement spread to Latin America, North America, Australia, South Africa and of course, the Land of Israel.
Due to the motorcycle trip, the first Maccabiah became possible, since the Yishuv in Israel did not have the means to hold the event.
The first Maccabiah and those that followed it were the highlight of the great miracle of the new generations in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora: strengthening the Israeli body in order to fulfill the words of Maimonides, the slogan of Maccabi: "A healthy mind in a healthy body" and to add strength to the building of the nation in the Land of Israel!
To this day, the events of the Maccabiah take place once every four years.
