Letter in English by Sir Moses Montefiore. Written by his secretary. Montefiore's signature appears at the end of the letter. Written on Montefiore's official stationery. 1844.
All the letters that have been sold in auctions in recent years were written at least thirty years later than the letter before us.
Therefore, the letter before us is extremely rare!
Sir Moses Haim Montefiore, (1784 –1885) was a British financier and banker, activist and philanthropist . Born to an Italian Jewish family, he donated large sums of money to promote industry, business, economic development, education and health among the Jewish community in the Levant, including the founding of Mishkenot Sha'ananim in 1860, the first settlement of the New Yishuv. He also devoted himself to philanthropy, particularly alleviating the distress of Jews abroad. For example, he went to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1840 to liberate from prison ten Syrian Jews of Damascus arrested after a blood libel.
Montefiore visited the Land of Israel seven times. Many neighborhoods of Jerusalem are named after him: Yemin Moshe, Mazkeret Moshe, Zichron Moshe and Kiryat Moshe.

One leaf written on both its sides. 12x22 cm.
