A beautiful, complete copy of a rare Hebrew classic: Sefer Chochmas Adam, Vilna 1815. This is the fundamental work of R. Avraham Danzig of Vilna on portions of Yoreh De’ah. It was released just a few years after the publication of his magnum opus, Chayei Adam, which first appeared in Vilna, 1810. Whereas Chayei Adam deals with portions of Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, this work deals with Yoreh De’ah. Complete copies of Chochmas Adam in good condition such as this copy are rare. 

In addition to the rarity of this first edition, it also boasts the sacred approbation of Rav Chaim of Volozhin, who rarely gave his approbation to new works. In fact, the author notes that initially he was hesitant; only after seeing how well Chayei Adam was accepted, did he grant his approbation to this work.

Contains a fascinating introduction from the author. In it, he details the circumstances under which he wrote the work, among other things. He also writes that his previous work Chayei Adam gained so much popularity, that in a short time all 1,400 copies which he printed were sold out. 

This copy comes with interesting provenance, as it had belonged to the Beis Midrash of Zasli (Zaslow), a small town in the district of Vilna, with some handwritten annotations. This adds some charm, as it was not only authored by a Vilna native and printed there, but even used throughout the years in the Beis Midrash of a nearby town, with several of the original stamps that attest this.  

In good condition. Bound in a magnificent leather binding, with ornate 24k gilt tooling on covers and spine.
