Letter from Rabbi Refael Yeshayah Azulai av”d Ancona – oldest son of the Chida.
Rabbi Refael Yeshayah Azulai (1743-1826) was the oldest son of the great Rabbi Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai – the Chida. He was born in Jerusalem and was a Torah giant. He answered many halachic questions. Some of the responsa printed in his Imrei Noam were printed in the Zichron Moshe and a few of his responsa were printed in his father’s works, where his father refers to him with great respect and love. When Rabbi Avraham Yisrael, the rabbi of Ancona, passed away in 1785, the leaders of the community turned to the Chida. He hinted that his son, Rabbi Refel Yeshayah, was a suitable candidate for the position and they accepted his advice. He served as rabbi of Ancona for many years, until he passed way on the 9th of Shevat, 1826. He lived the same amount of years as his father, 83, and was mourned for many days by his community. (For more information about him, refer to Binyahu’s work on the Chida, p. 476-487.)
