Fascinating Letter by the Gaon Rabbi Alter Shaul Pepper Av Beit Din of the Hungarian Community of New York, to the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Zvi Schor Rosh Av Beit Din of Badatz Chassidim Jerusalem - New York, 1920
"כי אילו לא הי' מנהלי כולל אונגארן שולחים כמה שד"ר להכא לא היו מגיעים אף למקצת המדרגה שעומדים עליה, ומי יתן לנו פועלים חרוצים כמוהם" (If only the managers of Kollel Ungaren had sent some Shadar here, we would have not reached the situation we are in. May we have diligent workers like them).
Lengthy, fascinating letter with interesting details about the Kollelim of Jerusalem and the Chalukah, by the Gaon Rabbi Alter Shaul Pepper, Rav of the large Beit Midrash of New York, to the Gaon Rabbi Avraham Zvi Schor Rosh Av Beit Din of Badatz Chassidim Jerusalem - New York, 1920.
The letter was sent to Rabbi Avraham Zvi Schor who was Rosh Av Beit Din of Badatz Chassidim Jerusalem and the manager of the Machzikei Hadat community, which united several organizations and Kollelim of Jerusalem. Apparently, Rabbi Schor asked his friend, Rabbi Pepper, to act in his favor among the Jews of New York. Rabbi Pepper advises him on the courses of action of the Kollelim: "כי תקווה טובה נצפה לחבורה הקדושה מחזה"ד (מחזיקי הדת), ולא רק מדמי הפדיון בעד העיתון רק מנדבות וסכומים הגונים לתמיכת הח"ק.. ויא"צ ולימוד משניות... ולזה נחוץ לשלוח העתון לרבנים באמריקע בין ימנו על העיתון אם לא, נחוץ שיגיע להם העתון בתמידות... ולזה נחוץ מאוד מאוד שיבוא משולח מיוחד ואי"ה אעמוד על ימינו... כי אילו לא הי' מנהלי כולל אונגארן שולחים כמה שד"ר להכא לא היו מגיעים אף למקצת המדרגה שעומדים עליה, ומי יתן לנו פועלים חרוצים כמוהם, כי אז ישגה וירומם הכנסות המחז"ה והכנסות כוללים – שאנו עמלים בעדם – במעלה רמה ונשגבה".

The great Gaon Rabbi Alter Shaul Pepper (1874-1936), one of the greatest Meshivim of the USA, author of Shut Avnei Zikaron. In his youth was a leading disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Aryeh leibush Horowitz, Av Beit Din of Stryj. After his marriage, served as Av Beit Din of Bitshkov. In 1912, he immigrated to the USA where he served as Rav of the large Beit Midrash of the Hungarian community and as president of the committee of rabbis of the USA.
