Historical Polemic: Rare Letter of Zealousness against Education Tax Signed by Leading Rabbis of Jerusalem, the Admor of Toldot Aharon, the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Fischer and More - Jerusalem, 1945

"ממס זה יוצאו להחזקת בתי חינוך של כפירה"  (This tax pays for educational linstitutions of heresy) - Historical letter of zealousness addressed to the British mandatory goverment, with the handwritten signatures of the leading rabbis of Jerusalem headed by the Admor of Toldot Aharon and Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Fischer - Jerusalem, 1945.

The letter was written by the rabbis following the application of a special education tax by the British mandatory authorities. Loyal to their princple of not enjoying funds received from unpure sources on the one hand and not funding non-religious schools on the other, the rabbis write to the British Governor of Jerusalem: "היות ועניין הטלת מס חינוך העירוני למחוז ירושלים, עומד להתגשם ח"ו, וכספי ההכנסה ממס זה יוצאו להחזקת בתי חינוך של כפירה והעברה על דת.... בתי התלמוד שלנו אינם רשאים ליהנות ממס הזה, כאשר פסקו לנו רבותינו המוסמכים ביותר...".

The rabbis warn the Governor that under no citcumstances will they agree to pay the tax willingly: "ולא נוכל לשלם אותו המס מרצוננו הטוב, ועירית ירושלים תוכל לגבות מאתנו הח"מ את המס הזה, אך ורק על ידי אמצעים של מכירה פומבית של חפצי ביתנו ע"י משרד ההוצאה לפועל..." !!!

The letter is signed by many rabbis including the Admor Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kahn of Toldot Ahromn, the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Fischer Rosh Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaChareidit and many more.

More than a hundred and fifty signatures of leading rabbis, has not been thoroughly studied.
