"והעת עת צרה היא ליעקב" Halachic Responsum Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Chaim Brody, the Rav of Prague - Echoing the Events of World War I - Prague, 1916

"ואיש אשר לב בשר לו לא יתן דמי לו" Halachic responsum letter pertaining to a Gett Kritut and Melechet Hotza'ah on Sabbath, handwritten and signed by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Brody, the Rav of Prague. Written on verso of the letter with the question that was handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yosef Stein, the grandson of Rabbi Azriel Halevi Landau, a disciple of the Mahari of Ziditchov - Prague, 1916. 

In his letter of question, Rabbi Yosef Stein asks Rabbeinu a Pshat about the Sugya of The Husband's Death in tractate Kiddushin and a question about Hotza'ah and Tchumin on Sabbath, of water that runs through pipes from afar.  Regrading the waterpipes, Rabbeinu answers: 

"בעניין המים הנמשכים בצינור אין מקום לפקפק, כי הם מכונסים מבעוד יום במקווה המים שבתוך העיר, ועוד שהצינורות בטלים לרשות שהם עוברים בו, וא"כ אין כאן לא משום תחומין ולא משום הוצאה. ואינני יודע מה לו ולצרה זאת להטיל ספק בדבר שפשט היתרו בכל מדינה ומדינה ובכל עיר ועיר וגאוני דור ודור לא ראו מקום לאסרו".

At the beginning of his letter, Rabbeinu writes several words about the period:

"מאז שבתי הביתה ידי מלאות עבודה בענייני כלל ופרט, והעת עת צרה היא ליעקב ואין לך יום וכו', ואיש אשר לב בשר לו לא יתן דמי לו והמלאכה רבה מנשוא והשעה דחוקה ואינה מספקת לפלפולא דאורייתא". 

To the best of our knowledge, the content of this letter has never been printed. 

As the Rav of Prague, Rabbeinu was first and foremost for all the rescue efforts and support of the many refugees that arrived in Bohemia, as indicated by the many letters by Galician rabbis who escaped to Bohemia and saw Rabbeinu as a beacon of hope.
