Figlio del pittore Franck Pietersz Verheyden, Mattheus Verheyden perse prematuramente il padre. Diventò allievo di Hendrik Carré II, Constantijn Netscher, Carel de Moor e Augustinus Terwesten II. Nel 1722 fu attivo ad Amsterdam quale ritrattista. La sua produzione è prevalentemente formata da ritratti con rarissime opere aventi come soggetto dei bambini, come “Allégorie des quatre saisons”, venduta a Parigi il 30/05/1997 da Millon & Associés.
