Sridai Aish. Responsa on Shechita. 1933/34.
Typed stencil of lengthy responsa penned by R. Y.Y Weinberg during the Shechita crisis in Europe in 1933-34. Primarily concerning cutting the entire neck of poultry, as well as electric stunning of livestock prior to slaughtering.
Bans on ritual slaughter have been proposed or enacted in a number of European countries, from the 1840s onward. Although ostensibly introduced for reasons of animal welfare, the consistent involvement of anti-Semites in the campaigns proves that the true intent was to impose restrictions on Jews at a time when they were just beginning to achieve enfranchisement. In the 1930’s the issue was one of European Jewry’s most pressing concerns, with Kosher slaughter banned in Germany 1933, Poland 1936 and Sweden 1937. Rabbinical leaders protested mightily against this discrimination and various works were authored on the topic.
103 pages. One sided. 29 cm. Bound. Good condition. Dry paper.
