The Great Synagogue of Danzig (now Gda?sk, Poland) was inaugurated in 1887. Prior to it being destroyed by the Nazi-dominated authorities in May 1939, the community shipped the contents of their synagogue to the United States for safekeeping. The collection presently resides in the Jewish Museum, New York.
