Prague: Slovakian Ministry of Finance 1940
Though nominally independent, Slovakia was highly dependent on Nazi Germany after the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia. In November 1940, Slovakia joined the Axis when its leaders signed the Tripartite Pact.
The Slovakian government subsequently began a process known as Slovakization (modeled on the Germans’ Aryanization). Jews’ bank accounts were frozen, while Jewish businesses were forcibly liquidated or transferred to Christian ownership. All Jewish owned property was expropriated, indeed over 250,000 acres of land was confiscated by the state. With this, two thirds of Slovakia’s 90,000 Jews were instantly impoverished.
