Three books – Zholkva Printing - signatures
Three halacha books of Zholkva Printing Press from beginning of the 19th century, 1803-1811.
1. Simlah Chadasha, Bechor Shor and Tevuot Shor, on the laws of shechita. Zholkva, 1811. At top of title page, 3 rows of a rubbed out nice dedication handwritten in pen. Under the erasure, the dedication can be read: "…from Menachem Katz Prostitz here in Zhelym [Sopronkeresztur] and its region".
Rabbi Menachem Katz Prostitz (1795-1891), was a prominent disciple of the Chatam Sofer who mentions him by name several times in his novella on Chulin. From 1834, he served as Rabbi of Ragendorf. He arrived at the home of his Rabbi the Chatam Sofer during the last minutes of his life and when nearing his last breath, the Chatam Sofer signaled Rabbi Menachem to leave the house so that the Cohen should not remain in a house with a dead person (Chut HaMeshulash). That same year he was appointed as Rabbi of Sopronkeresztur (Zhelym). He was one of the leading rabbis of Hungary. Among the most renowned of the disciples of his yeshiva were Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, author of Arugot HaBosem, Rabbi Aharon Chaim son of the Maharam Schick, etc.
2. She'elot U'Tshuvot L'Harav Rabbeinu Asher (Rosh responsa). Zholkva, 1803. Third edition. Various signatures: "Meir --- Aharon HaCohen [of Litmorsk]", etc.
3. Gedolei Terumah, commentary on Sefer HaTerumot of Rabbi Shmuel HaSefardi, by Rabbi Azarya Fijo. Zholkva, 1809. Second edition "like in Venice". On title page, signature of Rabbi "Dov Ze'ev Eisenstadt". On the fancy leather binding, impression of owners' name, David Mendel Eisenstadt.
Varied size and condition. 35.5-36 cm. Good-fair condition, moth damage.
