Anti-Semitic Medal – Germany, 1694
Anti-Semitic medal. Cast silver. Germany, 1694. Obverse: a Jew holding a stick with a bag of corn on his back. Satan empties the bag and the inscription: "Du Korn Jude" [the Corn Jew] and "Theure Zeit" [starvation time]. Reverse: a sieve with an inscription on its rim: "Wer Korn Inhelt Dem Fluchen Die Leu The Aber Segen Komt Über Den So Es Uer Kauft". Diameter: 35 mm. This is one of the first anti-Semitic medals. Similar "Du Korn Jude" medals have been minted in Germany since late 18th cent. and through the 19th cent. The goal of these medals was to introduce Jews as responsible for rising food prices or for a period of starvation in Germany.
