Photograph of Herzl and the Zionist Delegation in Athens, 1898
Photo of Herzl and his friends, members of his delegation, in the ruins of a temple in Athens (probably Acropolis). The photo was taken between the 21st and 23rd of October 1898.
Sitting next to the columns: (From right to left): David Wolfson, Moshe Shnierer, Herzl and Max Bodenheimer. In the autumn of 1898 Theodor Herzl left for Jerusalem with four companions. The journey went through Greece and was documented by a "Kodak" camera which David Wolfson purchased before the journey. The members of the delegations arrived in Athens and Crete between 21-23.10.1898. Herzl mentioned it in his diary: "…We go by islands rich with Greek stories… and then to Athens…". (From: "With Herzl to Jerusalem, editor: Yoram Mayorek, Carta publishing, Jerusalem, 1998, p.16).
