Illustrated Ketubah - Calcutta, 1928
Ketubah recording the marriage of the groom Yehezkel ben Yosef Yehezkel Eliyau Shohat and the bride Rachel bat David Yehezkel Ezra. Calcutta, Av 1928.
Ink and gouache on thick paper.
Ketubah of the Baghdadi community in Calcutta. Inside the frames are illustrations of leaves, flowers and birds colored in a delicate, expert hand. At the top are two tigers, their tails swinging aloft. The ketubah is divided into two parts – at the top are two architectural frames containing the opening: "Beshem Rachman…". Two fish swimming toward each other are depicted on the band separating the blessings from the text. The fish apparently symbolize fertility and protection from the evil eye.
The ketubah text is written in a separate column in the middle of the bottom part, with signatures of the witnesses.
34X50.5 cm. Good condition. Some stains and color smears. Some creases. A number of pinholes to top part.
