Ornamental Bedouin Veil – Embroidery with Silver Coins
Ornamental Bedouin "burqa" face covering or veil, with silver coins. Palestine, Negev Region (Beersheba District), [early 20th century].
Colorful embroidery on cotton fabric; silver and copper coins and disks; coral beads; colored beads.
Ornamental Bedouin veil or face covering. The rectangular upper piece of embroidered cloth is meant to be tied around the forehead, while the additional pieces of embroidery, along with the strings of coins, serve to cover the nose and mouth area. Suspended from the forehead strap are short chains with coral beads. On either side of the head, long chains with diamond-shaped pendants at their ends dangle from the extremities of the veil.
