Booklet with a Eulogy Handwritten by Rabbi Ze'ev Wolf Chayut for Rabbi Yehoshua Heshil Ashkenazi Av Beit Din of Lublin - 1867 - Unknown and has Never been Printed!
Handwritten booklet. On the title page it is written: "Mourning for the great genius … Rabbi Yehoshua Heshil Ashkenazi Av Beit Din of Lublin … by Ze'ev Wolf son of the genius Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Chayut". [1867].
The eulogy is an Aggadic sermon on the Torah and adhering to it. In a comment, he presents what had been written to him by "the genius, researcher rabbi Shlomo Leib Ha'Cohen Rappaport Av Beit Din of Prague".
At the end of the booklet, a poem (its first page is vowelized) titled "Misped Mar" (Bitter Eulogy" about Rabbi Ashkenazi. 8 pp.
Rabbi Yehoshua Heshil Ashkenazi was the son of Rabbi Meshulam Zalman Ashkenazi who was appointed Av Beit Din of Lublin in 1826. After his father's death, he replaced him as the rabbi of Lublin, holding the position for fourteen years. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Binyamin Brody of Grodno. Died in 1867 and was replaced by Rabbi Tzaddok Ha'Cohen of Lublin.
The writer, rabbi Ze'ev Wolf Chayut (1845-1901) was the youngest son of Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Chayut. He was a great Torah scholar and researcher who published articles about the history of the Rishonim in various journals.
