Documents Archive, Nitzanim Prisoners, Israel Independence War
Group of documents which belonged to Zvi Brunfeld, one of the 106 members of Kibbutz Nitzanim, who were captured during the occupation of the kibbutz by the Egyptians in the Israeli Independence War, on 7/6/1948. Members of Nitzanim returned from captivity after the armistice agreement with Egypt, which was signed on February 24, 1949. For years, the decision of the captives to surrender was criticized and their names were cleared only after a long struggle.
The documents include letters sent to and from captivity, including an exchange of letters between him and his wife who is about to give birth (in which she informs him of the birth of their daughter and consults with him on what name to call her, and he expresses his hope to see his wife and daughter soon, and tells her about life in captivity), letters that were sent to his wife from other female captives who were in the women's camp in detention (the men and women were separated in detention into two different camps), a book of poems and a diary he kept for part of the captivity period describing the life of the captives in the camp, textbooks for grammar and English from captivity, a photograph of the "dramatic troupe after the end of the camp" and letters sent to the prisoner's wife during his captivity, from Israel and abroad.
Dozens of documents, various sizes, good general condition, interesting personal documentation of an important chapter in the country's history.
