Book of Yosifon in Yiddish with 64 Woodcut Illustrations Bound Together With First Edition of She’aris Yisrael. Amsterdam, 1743

1. Book of Yosifon – History of the Jewish people beginning with Adam Harishon and spanning the eras of the Babylonian kingdom, Alexander the Great, and Roman wars until the Churban by first-century historian Joseph ben Gurion Hakohein (Flavius Josephus).

2. She’aris Yisrael – History of the Jewish people in Yiddish from the era of the Churban until the times of the author, Rabbi Menachem Halevi Almander. This book is regarded as the sequel to Yosifon and often called Yosifon Vol. 2. She’aris Yisrael was immensely popular throughout history. This is the first edition of over twenty subsequent editions.

Over 60 splendid woodcut illustrations pictorially depict Jewish history and the images of the famous kings and Caesars mentioned in this famous work.

Both Kitzur Shulchan Aruch Ch. 91 and Mishnah Berurah 307:58 state that Josephus is not a secular work and that it is permissible to read on Shabbos as it encompasses mussar and teachings that cultivate fear of heaven.

Both works feature endorsements by Rabbi Aryeh Leib, Av Beis Din of Amsterdam, who was the son-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi and father of Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam.

This translated edition underwent meticulous editing and amendments

Amsterdam, 1743. [4], 244: [4] 148 leaves. Page size: 18 cm. The volumes feature separate title pages and are bound together in attractive old leather binding from the time of printing with remnants of clasps.
