The Rashba’s teshuvos were printed over the course of many centuries, and Poskim refer to the present anthology of teshuvos as Shu”t HaRashba Vol. 1.

Rabbeinu Shlomo ben Aderes (1235–1310) more commonly known by his acronym, Rashba, was one of the premier Sephardic Rishonim and commentators on the Talmud. He was a talmid of Rabbeinu Yonah and the Ramban, and from his seat on the Rabbinate in Barcelona, dispatched thousands of teshuvos that were universally accepted as cornerstones of halachah. A significant portion of the Beis Yosef is based on the Rashba’s teshuvos, and in his writings, Rabbi Yosef Karo praises him with the accolade, “Pillar of the world; with his light, we see light” (Beis Yosef Yoreh Deah Ch. 110).

The present collection encompasses 1,255 teshuvos!

Both the title page and flyleaf feature the autograph of Rabbi Betzalel Rensburg of Prague, the leaves of the sefer include a number of handwritten glosses, one of which is autographed “Betzalel RB” (leaf 19b).

Rabbi Betzalel Rensburg (1762-1821) was one of the great Achronim of Prague. He was a disciple of the Noda B’Yehudah who described him as “My friend, the wondrous and brilliant young man” (Noda B’Yehudah Orach Chaim Ch. 65). The Chasam Sofer also inscribed in his hesped, “The famous genius, pious and of holy birth, [who] sits and learns all day, and there is hardly anyone after him who resembles him” (Toras Moshe Hashalem, Devarim p. 184). His legacy includes Horeh Gever, Pischei Niddah and Hagaos on the Vilna Shas, among others.

Upon the order of the censor, a small note was glued to the title page clarifying that the “gentiles” mentioned in sefer do not refer to the local gentiles but to gentiles from previous eras. The page numbers were inserted by hand by the censor.
