The Maharil is recognized as ‘the father of Ashkenazic customs, and his sefer is regarded as a fundamental halachic masterpiece. The Maharil’s sefer was the prime influence on the Rema’s rulings in the Shulchan Aruch, and all Ashkenazic Jews followed his customs.
