Responsa Regarding Halachos of Writing A Sefer Torah by Harav Moshe Halevi Pollack, Av Beis Din

In 1876, Hagaon Harav Moshe Pollack was preparing to fulfill the mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah and dispatched a letter to Maharam Schick to clarify several halachic matters regarding the lines and size of a Sefer Torah.

In his letter, he refers to a halachic measurement noted by the Chasam Sofer and concludes, “Above all, I beseech and request, since Hashem has certainly granted [you] the merit of fulfilling [the mitzvah of] writing a Sefer Torah, my soul yearns to know the length and number of lines…”

Hagaon Harav Moshe Halevi Pollack (1845-1889), Av Beis Din of Bonyhad, was one of the greatest Rabbanim of Hungary and marbitzei Torah in his time who served as Rav and mentor to many future Rabbanim in Hungary. He was called ‘A celebrated genius and tzaddik’ who battled to preserve authentic Jewish tradition and founded Adas Yirei Hashem in Bonyhad. He succeeded his father, Rabbi Yitzchak Zeckel Halevi Pollack, as Av Beis Din of Bonyhad, and was a noted disciple of the Ksav Sofer and Mahar”i Assad. His famous sefarim include Vayedaber Moshe, Birkas Moshe and Tikkun Moshe. (HaChasam Sofer V’talmidav p. 524)

The Maharam Schick’s response to his letter was published in Shailos U’teshuvos Maharam Schick Vol. Yoreh Deah Ch. 261-262)
