GUNTHER-EBERHARDT WISLICENY
(1912-1985) German Waffen-SS Obersturmbannfuhrer. He was posted to the Der Fuhrer Regiment which was one of several regiments responsible for the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre in June 1944. In retaliation for the death of an SS guard, several regiments came to this village and closed it off. Women and children were locked in a church and the men were led to a barn. The SS guards shot the men, covered them in fuel, and proceeded to light the barn on fire. The officers placed an incendiary device near the church and ignited it. Their actions murdered 247 women and 205 children. The town was partially destroyed. For his actions in the war, Wisliceny received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. After the war, he was investigated and jailed but then released in 1951. Signed in blue ink on the obverse. 3.25 x 5 inches.
