August von Siegen (1850 - 1920s) Germany
August von Siegen (1850 - 1920s) Oil on Woodpanel, Signed Lower Right, Measures ( 7.5 x 13 inches) w/frame ( 12 x 17 inches) August von Siegen was a German Veduta painter who was active in Munich and Vienna. He was especially known for his paintings of coastal views, urban scenes, and Venetian landscapes. He lived in Monaco but also worked in Vienna and traveled through Europe, painting architectural landscapes of cities and towns. He also visited the East and produced a series of Orientalist paintings in Ismir, Turkey. His works are highly appreciated for their attention to detail and architectural details rendered with clarity. He created both vedutas of old Dutch port cities such as Amsterdam and atmospheric, idealized Capriccios. August von Siegen devoted himself as a painter, especially cityscapes. Inspiration for his pictures he received on his trips to Venice, Rome, and Izmir. Many of his cityscapes show real places, but he often gave himself up to his own imagination.
