Hadassah Hospital, Mount Har Hazofim, was inaugurated in 1939 and soon became the most sophisticated in the Middle East. When the attacks on the Yishuv intensified in 1948 in order to thwart the establishment of a Hebrew state, the approach to Mount Har Hazofim became highly fortified. On May 8 it was necessary to evacuate the last medical staff from Mount Har Hazofim. Soldiers of the Haganah were left on the mountain to maintain Jewish sovereignty and preserve property.
In the Six Day War, Jerusalem was united, and on June 8, 1967, the Hadassah leadership raised its flag on Mount Scopus and declared, "This is a flag of war in ignorance and disease, a flag of peace.
