RICHARD LIVESAY. A Boy in Skeleton Suit with Pet Dog, c. 1780.
RICHARD LIVESAY. A Young Boy in Skeleton Suit with Pet Dog, c. 1780. Oil on canvas, 10 3/8 x 8 ¼ in., on original, oval strainer under eglomise mat within a painted print frame with gilded sand mat, 17 ¾ x 15 ½ in. overall. Attributed to Richard Livesay (British, 1753-1823), this charming portrait of a young boy was painted as a companion piece to his older brother, a young officer in the British Army. He wears a blue, double-breasted jacket worn buttoned inside of trousers, a type of boy’s dress just coming into fashion and which became known as a “skeleton suit.”
