ANTIQUE 19TH C UKRANIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF PELICAN
An antique 19th-century Ukranian Orthodox icon representing a rare allegorical composition symbolizing the suffering of Christ. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board with gilding. Title and inscriptions in Church Slavonic. The icon depicts a pelican feeding the chicks with its own blood, as well as a crucifix, spears, cup of the New Covenant, and Jesus Christ in heaven.
