Rabbi Menachem Mendel Ashkenazi ben Baruch Bendt of Shklov (1740 - 1827) was a distinct disciple of our Lord the Gra, and the first of the Olim in the aliya of the Gra's students. He authored many books on Kabbalah on the way of receiving the Arizal's teachings and his Rabbi the Gra. As is known, even after the death of his Rabbi the Gra he continued to receive Torah words from him in a dream, and even wrote these Torah words in his books.

כמ"כ מעריך בענייני שמות הקודש וביאור סודותיהם, וענייני הנהגת הבורא בעולמו. בסוף דבריו בעמוד זה מסיים 'יראת ה' ראשית חכמה ראשית הכל ואחרית הכל'
רבי מנחם מנדל אשכנזי בן ברוך בנדט משקלוב (ת"ק - ל' בשבט ה'תקפ"ז) תלמיד מובהק לאדונינו הגר"א, וראשון העולים בעליית תלמידי הגר"א. חיבר ספרים רבים בקבלה על דרך קבלת האר"י ורבו הגר"א. כנודע שגם לאחר פטירת רבו הגר"א המשיך לקבל ממנו דברי תורה בחלום, ואף דברי תורה אלו כתב בספריו.
