Manuscript - praises and stories about the Gaon the author of 'Beit HaYotzer' - in the handwriting of his grandson and distinguished student Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel

A large manuscript, including a preface to the book 'Beit HaYotzer' which was never published, apparently in the handwriting of his student and grandson Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel (there is a great similarity between the handwriting in front of us and the handwriting of the Rabbi).

The introduction mainly contains praises and stories about his rabbi, as well as a few Torah pieces by the author.

According to the deletions and additions it is evident that this is a draft written as an introduction to the book. But for some reason, in the end, when Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel printed the book 'Beit HaYotzer', he put a different preface in it, which is not at all similar to the one before us.

From the manuscript

"from his youth i child can be known to be a lively man of many deeds, and while he was tender in years, he traveled to a great yeshiva... God's spirit was in him, and his rabbi praised him... And he syudied the torah with wonderful perseverance, and he left the place of his birth and his feet to go and demand to ask for a rabbi in the Torah, and his pure mind did not cool until he reached his goal to find the one who his soul loved the holy rabbi Muhara"m As"h...."

In what follows, Rabbi Rata's learning and righteousness from youth are described, and his studies in yeshiva, the ordination he received, his tenure as rabbinate, and more.

"As for the one who did not see the light of his face and his appearance at the time when he was literally like an heavenly angel, he did not see the joy of a mitzvah ever".

"And I establish a special blessing for the rabbi... who took pains in collecting the divrei Tora... by the eminently brilliant rabbi.... the master of the generation the hoky Rabbi Yoel Zvi Rata".

Next to this passage is written: "A responsa book 'Beit HaYotzer'".

After that, there is a long section regarding the virtue of learning Torah through hard work.

Later on, the writer again praises the genius author, and adds: "And there is no doubt in me that he has surely received the blessings of Ruach Hakodesh"!

"And yet my hand is inclined to spread his teachings that flow from the source of his wisdom which his brother left, in Halacha and Agada..."

Biography

The Gaon Rabbi Yoel Zvi Rata served as rabbi and head of yeshiva in a number of communities in Hungary, most notably in Khust. Author of "Beit HaYotzer" responsa.

When he was about 11 years old, he went to Ungvar to study at Rabbi Meir Eisenstätter's yeshiva. After 7 years he received a Heter Hora'ah,

His first rabbinate was in Poldesh. In 1882 he began serving as a rabbi in Baratu-Oifalo and in 1884 he moved to serve in Brazeno. after that he filled the place of Rabbi Amram Bloom in the Khost rabbinate. In Khost he presided over a large yeshiva, and was also famous for his sermons. Many halachic questions were addressed to him from all over the country.

Rabbi Rata traveled to the Rebbe's of Hungary and Galicia, Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum of Uyhel, Rabbi Shalom Rokach of Belz, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Friedman of Liska, and especially to Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz and his son Rabbi Yehezkel Shraga Halberstam of Shinava.

Among his students: Rabbi Eliezer Dietsch - rabbi of Bonhad and author of "P'ri HaSadeh", Rabbi Yitzhak Frankel (his grandson) who later served as rabbi of the ultra-orthodox congregation in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Rata left behind many writings, some of which were printed in the books 'Beit HaYotzer', 'Derashot Beit HaYotzer', 'Yotzer Or', and more.

כתב יד – שבחים וסיפורים על הגאון בעל 'בית היוצ"ר' – בכתב ידו של נכדו ותלמידו המובהק רבי יצחק פרענקיל זצ"ל

כתב יד גדול, ובו הקדמה לספר 'בית היוצ"ר' שלא פורסמה מעולם, ככל הנראה בכתב ידו של תלמידו ונכדו רבי יצחק פרענקיל זצ"ל (יש דמיון גדול בין הכתב שלפנינו לכתב ידו של הר"י).

ההקדמה מכילה בעיקר שבחים וסיפורים על רבו, וכן מעט חידושי תורה של הכותב.

לפי המחיקות והוספות ניכר כי מדובר בטיוטה שנכתבה כהקדמה לספר. אך משום מה בבסופו של דבר כאשר הדפיס רבי יצחק פרענקיל את הספר 'בית היוצ"ר', הניח בו הקדמה אחרת פרי עטו, שאינה דומה כלל לזו שלפנינו.

"אודה ד' ... אהלללנו אשר לא עזב חסדו ואמתו מאתי... הגה"ג צדיק נשגב הוא חסיד הוא עניו כקש"ת מו"ה יוא"צ זצלה"ה אבד"ק חוסט והגליל יצ"ו...".

"במעלליו התנכר נער להיות איש חי רב פעלים ובעודנו רך בשנים נסע בישיבה גדולה... רוח ה' נוססה בו וישבחוהו רבנן... ולעי באורייתא בהתמדה נפלאה ועזב מקום מולדתו וכיתת רגליו לילך ולדרוש לבקש לו רב בתורה ולא נתקררה דעתו הטהורה עד שהגיע למחוז חפצו למצוא את שאהבה נפשו האה"ק מוהר"ם א"ש..."

בהמשך הדברים מתוארת למדנותו וצדקותו של הרב ראטה כבר בשנות נעוריו. בהמשך מתוארת מסכת חייו, לימודיו בישיבה, הסמיכה שקיבל, כהונתו ברבנות, ועוד.

"אשר מי שלא ראה באור פניו וזיו תוארו בעת אשר ממש כמלאך ד' לא ראה שמחה של מצוה מימיו".

"והנני קובע ברכה ביחוד לש"ב המופלג... אשר טרח באספות הד"ת, יתן ד' ויעל... מאת הרב הגאון המובהק הנודע למשגב בגודל יראתו הקודמת לחכמתו, בוצינא קדישא, מופת הדור נ"י החכם השלם כקש"ת מו"ה יואל צבי ראטה האב"ד, העמיק עוד הגדיל תושיה, עוד בימי עלומיו... שבחוהו רבנן... ועיני ולבי לנדיבי עמים אשר בצל החכמה והכסף יתלוננו כי יבואו עה"ח [על החתום] לקחת המחבתר הלז...".

לצד הקטע הזה נכתב: "ספר שאלות ותשובות ביתר היוצר".

לאחר מכן מופיע קטע ארוך בעניין מעלת לימוד תורה בעמל.

בהמשך שוב מספר הכותב בשבחיו של הגאון המחבר, ומוסיף: "ובלתי ספק אצלי אשר בוודאי זכה למדריגות רוח הקודש"!

"ועוד ידי נטויה להפיץ אבי תורתו הנוזלים ממקור חכמתו אשר השאיר אחיו ברכה, בהלכה ובאגדה...".

הכותב מציין את תאריך הכתיבה: "ויהי' לו לשם עולם לפ"ק" (= 583), וצ"ע.

תולדותיו בקודש

הגאון רבי יואל צבי ראטה זצ"ל כיהן כרב וראש ישיבה במספר קהילות בהונגריה, ובראשן בחוסט. בעל שו"ת "בית היוצ"ר".

בהיותו כבן 11 נסע לאונגוואר ללמוד בישיבתו של רבי מאיר אייזנשטטר. לאחר 7 שנים קיבל היתר הוראה,

רבנותו הראשונה הייתה בפולדש. בשנת תרמ"ב החל לכהן כרב בבאראט'ו-אויפאלו ובשנת תרמ"ד עבר לכהן בברזנו. בשנת תרי"ד מילא את מקום הרב עמרם בלום ברבנות חוסט. בחוסט עמד בראשות ישיבה גדולה, והתפרסם גם בדרשותיו. שאלות הלכתיות רבות הופנו אליו מקצווי ארץ.

 

הרב ראטה היה נוסע לאדמו"רי הונגריה וגליציה, רבי משה טייטלבוים מאויהל, רבי שלום רוקח מבעלז, רבי צבי הירש פרידמן מליסקא, ובעיקר לרבי חיים הלברשטאם מצאנז ובנו רבי יחזקאל שרגא הלברשטאם משינאווא.

בין תלמידיו: הגאון רבי אליעזר דיטש - רבה של בונהאד ובעל "פרי השדה", רבי יצחק פרענקיל (נכדו) שכיהן לימים כרב בעדה החרדית בירושלים.

הרב ראטה זצ"ל הותיר אחריו כתבים רבים, מהם שנדפסו בספרים 'בית היוצ"ר', 'דרשות בית היוצר', 'יוצר אור', ועוד.
