The precious and rare edition: the son of the king and the monk - Livorno, 1831 - signatures of great Rabbis.

The son of the king and the monk. The words of the sages and their riddles. Edited in the Hebrew version by Avraham Halevi ben Shmuel Ibn Hisdai in the 12th or 13th century. This is a new work by his pen, based on the story of Buddha. Ibn Hisdai introduced sweeping changes to the book: in form, language, style, type, materials and worldview. These changes place the book in its Hebrew version as an independent, original version, with different goals than those in the Arab-Christian version. The Hebrew version of 'The Son of the King and the Monk' is an expression of the shared views and beliefs of the Jews, Christians and Muslims, without referring to the contradictions between the views.

We have before us an early edition, very rare - it is not in the National Library, and has never been seen in Bidspirit sales. (In some catalogs, the "third" edition, printed in 1836, was mistakenly listed as if it had been printed in 1831, while only the one in front of us was printed then.)

On the gate is an ancient dedication (partially cut) by Rabbi Yuda to Rabbi Ezra. It has not been investigated who it is.

On the back of the cover and on the pages of the book, as well as on the last page, is the signature of Rabbi Ya'akov Shmuel Elmalich. author of 'Va'yisa Ya'akov', one of the great sages of Aleppo in Syria. From there he immigrated to America and served as the rabbi of the Aleppo community in New York.

מהדורה יקרת המציאות: בן המלך והנזיר - ליוורנו, תקצ"א [1831] - חתימות גדולי ישראל

בן המלך והנזיר. דברי חכמים וחידותם. נערך בנוסח העברי על ידי אברהם הלוי בן שמואל אבן חסדאי במאה ה-12 או ה-13. זוהי יצירה חדשה פרי עטו, המבוססת על סיפורו של בודהא. אבן חסדאי הכניס לספר שינויים מגמתיים מפליגים: בצורה, בלשון, בסגנון, בסוגה, בחומרים ובהשקפת העולם. שינויים אלה מעמידים את הספר בגרסתו העברית כגרסה עצמאית, מקורית, בעלת מטרות שונות מאלה שבנוסח הערבי-נוצרי. הנוסח העברי של 'בן המלך והנזיר' הוא ביטוי לדעות ולאמונות המשותפות של היהודים, הנוצרים והמוסלמים, מבלי להתייחס לניגודים שיש בין הדעות.

לפנינו מהדורה קדומה, נדירה מאוד - אינה בספריה הלאומית, ולא נראתה מעולם במכירות בידספיריט. (בכמה קטלוגים נרשמה בטעות את המהדורה ה"שלישית", שנדפסה בשנת תקצ"ו, כאילו נדפסה בתקצ"א, בעוד שרק זו שלפנינו נדפסה אז.)

בשער הקדשה עתיקה (קצוצה בחלקה) מאת רבי יאודה אל רבי עזרא. לא נחקר במי מדובר.

בגב השער ובדפי הספר וכן בדף האחרון חתימת רבי יעקב שמואל אלמליח זצ''ל. מחבר הספר 'ויש"א יעקב', מגדולי חכמי חאלב שבסוריה. משם היגר לאמריקה ושימש כרבם של עדת החאלבים בניו יורק.

מצב טוב. כריכה ישנה לא מקורית. כתמי זמן.
