A copy of Rabbi Ya'akov Simcha Rafish, a student of Rabbi Akiva Eiger! Kodesh Hilulim - Amsterdam, 1819, a unique and rare edition

Kodesh Hilulim. By Rabbi Avraham son of rabbi Aryeh Lieb Levenstam, author of 'Pnei Aryeh'. The content of the book - matters of faith and the service of God, and the matter of the commandment 'Love your neighbor as yourself'.

The author is also known for another book he wrote, "Tzror haChayim", against the reformers' changes in prayers and the synagogue.

The book in front of us was printed in Amsterdam, in the year 1819. A single and very rare edition, almost never seen in sales.

At the beginning of the book are the consensuses of Geonei Israel, as well as a long and interesting, punctuated poem, which was composed by the brother of the author - Rabbi Chaim Levenstam.

The special copy in front of us was in the possession of two great rabbis who studied in it - Rabbi Ya'akov Chaim Ra'afish who was one of Rabbi Akiva Eiger's close friends, and his student Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov Naftali Zilberbeg.

2. Signatures of Rabbi Ya'akov Ya'akov Simcha Rafish, author of the book 'Shaarei Simcha', student of the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger. His signatures appear on the pages of the forzatz "Simcha...". Two inscriptions (one of them long): "זה הספר שייך לאדמו"ר המאור הגדול... ראש של כל בני הגולה... ר' יעקב שמחה רעפפיש".

An entry (on the page of the forzatz) in the handwriting of his student Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov Naftali Zilberberg: "קניתי מעזבון כבוד צמיד לבבינו אדמו"ר הרב הגאון ... יעקב שמחה זי"ע מחבר ס' שערי שמחה... תרל"ח ווערשוב- חיים יעקב נפתלי". Rabbi Zilberberg's stamp appears twice on the cover of the book.

Rabbi Ya'akov Simcha Rafish zt'l (1677-1737), one of the great men of his generation, Rabbi and Av Beit Din of the city of Campano in Prussia. One of the close associates of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and the author of the books "Shaarei Simcha" and "Mishkan Ha'aidut".

He was born in Ravitch in Prussia to Rabbi Moshe Rafish. Learned from Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Ravitcher [from Ravitch] who was a Dayan in Lisa. He married a daughter from the town of Campano near Poznań and moved to live in the city.

At a young age (around 1827) he was appointed head of the Beit Din of Campano. After the death of the rabbi of the city, Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Landoi in 1835, he filled his place until 1840. In the same year, the Malbim ran against him in the elections for the rabbinate of the city, and won. Rabbi Rafish returned to the Rabbi's office and cooperated with the Malbim in the leadership of the community.

In total he served as rabbinate in Campano for fifty years, in the yeshiva he led in the city he taught regular classes and many of his students were ordained rabbis. He served in this position until his death.

His book "Mishkan Ha'aidut" was printed by his student Rabbi Chaim Ya'akov Naftali Zilberberg (1850-1930), a Rabbi in Warsaw, and one of the famous geniuses of his generation. He had the writings of his father and grandfather printed. like his grandfather he was also involved in Rabbi Akiva Eiger's Torah and began preparing Rabbi Akiva Eiger's sfer "Drush VeChidush - Tinyana" for printing. For many years he devoted a considerable part of his time to the interpretation and publication of the books of Maharal Tzintz.

קדש הלולים. מאת רבי אברהם ב"ר אריה ליב לוונשטאם בעל 'פני אריה'. תוכן הספר - ענייני אמונה ועבודת ה', ועניין מצוות 'ואהבת לרעך כמוך'.

המחבר נודע גם מספר נוסף שחיבר, 'צרור החיים', נגד חידושי הרפורמים בתפילות ובבית הכנסת.

הספר שלפנינו נדפס באמשטרדם, בשנת תקע"ט. מהדורה יחידה ונדירה מאוד, כמעט לא נראתה במכירות.

בפתח הספר הסכמות גאוני ישראל, וכן שיר ארוך ומעניין, מנוקד, אותו חיבר אחי המחבר - רבי חיים לוונשטאם.

העותק המיוחד שלפנינו היה ברשותם של שני גדולי ישראל אשר למדו בו - רבי יעקב חיים רעפיש אשר היה ממקורביו של רבי עקיבא איגר, ותלמידו רבי חיים יעקב נפתלי זילברבג, זכר צדיקים לברכה.

רבי יעקב שמחה רפיש זצ"ל (תקס"ז-תרל"ז), מגאוני דורו, ראב"ד ורב העיר קמפנו בפרוסיה. ממקורביו של רבי עקיבא איגר זצ"ל, ומחבר הספרים "שערי שמחה" ו"משכן העדות".

הוא נולד בראביץ' שבפרוסיה לרב משה רפיש. למד מפי רבי אליעזר ליפמן ראוויטשער [=מראביץ'] שהיה דיין בליסא. נישא לבת העיר קמפנו הסמוכה לפוזנא ועבר להתגורר בעיר.

בגיל צעיר (בסביבות 1827) התמנה כראש בית הדין של קמפנו. לאחר פטירת רב העיר, רבי יוסף שמואל לנדוי בשנת תקצ"ו (1835), מילא את מקומו עד שנת ת"ר (1840). באותה שנה תמודד מולו בבחירות לרבנות העיר, המלבי"ם, וניצח. הרב רפיש שב למשרת הראב"ד ושיתף פעולה עם המלבי"ם בהנהגת הקהילה.

בסך הכל כיהן ברבנות בקמפנו במשך חמישים שנה, בישיבה שניהל בעיר העביר שיעורים קבועים ורבים מתלמידיו נסמכו לרבנות. במשרה זו כיהן עד פטירתו.

ספרו "משכן העדות" נדפס בידי תלמידו רבי חיים יעקב נפתלי זילברברג (תר"י-תר"ץ), מו"צ בוורשה, ומגאוני דורו המפורסמים. ערך לדפוס את כתבי אביו וסבו. כסבו אף הוא עסק בתורת רבי עקיבא איגר והחל בהכנתו לדפוס של ספרו של רעק"א "דרוש וחידוש – תנינא". במשך שנים רבות הקדיש חלק נכבד מזמנו לביאורם ולהוצאתם לאור של ספרי מהרא"ל צינץ.
