The author, Adolf Friedman, was a writer, one of the leaders of Zionism in Germany and the Netherlands, from the circle of associates of Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl, from the Second World Zionist Congress.

Friedman was a member of the Zionist Executive Committee between 1903-1920. During the First World War he worked in Bern, Switzerland, among other things to transfer aid money from the Jews of the United States to the Jews of Lithuania. He implemented various political issues in his mission.

Among other things, as part of the El Arish plan, in 1903 Friedman participated in the survey expedition on behalf of the Zionist Organization to Egypt, and he also went on to travel to the Land of Israel.

In October 1932 he was seriously injured in a car accident in Amsterdam, as a result of which he died in December 1932. His wife, Rosa Friedman, the granddaughter of Rabbi Samson Rephael Hirsch, immigrated to Israel after his death with their only daughter. The daughter married in Israel and died shortly after.

At the beginning of the book a portrait of Herzl is printed drawn by the Zionist artist R. Herman Struck.

At the end of the book some letters from Herzl were printed. An interesting detail: in one of them he signed "Benyamin", and Friedman commented: "Das iz Herzl's Yidsher Namun on er hat zich mit iham banuzt noor in intime briaef" (- this is Herzl's Jewish name and he used it in intimate letters).

Several letters sent to Herzl from various businessmen in Israel and abroad were also printed.

המחבר, אדולף פרידמן, היה סופר, מראשי הציונות בגרמניה ובהולנד, מחוג מקורביו של בנימין זאב הרצל, החל מהקונגרס הציוני העולמי השני.

 פרידמן היה חבר הוועד הפועל הציוני בין 1903–1920. בתקופת מלחמת העולם הראשונה פעל בברן, שווייץ, בין השאר להעברת כספי סיוע מיהודי ארצות הברית ליהודי ליטא. הוא הוציא לפועל בשליחותו נושאים מדיניים שונים.

בין השאר, במסגרת תוכנית אל עריש השתתף פרידמן ב-1903 במשלחת הסקר מטעם ההסתדרות הציונית למצרים, והמשיך גם למסע בארץ ישראל.

באוקטובר 1932 נפצע קשות בתאונת דרכים באמסטרדם, בעקבותיה נפטר בדצמבר 1932. אשתו, רוזה פרידמן, נכדת הרב רש"ר הירש, עלתה לארץ לאחר מותו עם בתם היחידה. הבת נישאה בארץ ונפטרה זמן קצר לאחר מכן.

בפתח הספר נדפס פורטרט של הרצל שצויר בידי האמן הציוני ר' הרמן שטרוק.

בסוף הספר נדפסו כמה מכתבים מאת הרצל. פרט מעניין: באחד מהם הוא חתם "בנימין", והעיר פרידמן: "דאס איז הערצל'ס אידישער נאמען און ער האט זיך מיט איהם בענוצט נור אין אינטימע בריעף" (- זהו שמו היהודי של הרצל והוא השתמש בו במכתבים אינטימיים).

כמו כן נדפסו כמה מכתבים שנשלחו אל הרצל מאת עסקנים שונים בארץ ובחו"ל.
