Seder Tikkun Leil Shavuot VeLeil Hoshana Rabbah, printed in large, handsome type with vowel points and cantillation marks, including Yehi Ratzon and other supplications, followed by an enumeration of the 613 commandments. Part of the title page printed in red ink. Chernivtsi, 1837. The title page bears two ownership stamps, somewhat faded, of Rebbe Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Rubin of Siret, one of the prominent Rebbes of the Ropshitz–Belz dynasties, renowned in his generation as a miracle worker and po’el yeshuot. Judging by the date of publication, this book accompanied the Rebbe of Siret throughout the sacred and exalted nights of the Jewish year, from his youth, when he was raised in the home of his grandfather, the Sar Shalom of Belz, until his later years, when he himself led thousands of Chassidim as a Rebbe. The night of Shavuot, the night of the Giving of the Torah, is traditionally spent by Jews throughout the generations in wakeful Torah study until dawn, preparing and sanctifying themselves for the moment when the Jewish people symbolically stand once again at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. In Chassidic teaching, this night is regarded as possessing an especially exalted spiritual quality as preparation for receiving the Torah. Rebbe Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Rubin of Siret [d. 8 Adar 1901] was one of the leading Rebbes of Bukovina in his generation, a descendant of the sacred dynasties of Ropshitz and Belz, and renowned as a miracle worker and po’el yeshuot. His father, Rabbi Yitzchak Rubin of Brody, was a grandson of Rebbe Rabbi Asher Yeshaya of Ropshitz – the celebrated “Rebbe Reb Asher’l”; his mother, Rebbetzin Eidel, was a daughter of Rebbe Rabbi Shalom Rokeach, the Sar Shalom of Belz. Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke was raised and educated in the home of his illustrious grandfather, the Sar Shalom of Belz, and thus merited from his youth to dwell in the presence of the founder of the Belz dynasty. He married the daughter of Rebbe Rabbi Yosef Alter Hager of Radowitz, son of Rabbi Chaim Hager of Kosov. Following his marriage, he settled in Siret, Bukovina, where he led his Chassidic court for many years. He became widely renowned as a miracle worker and po’el yeshuot, and multitudes sought him out for his blessings and counsel. His reputation as one whose blessings brought salvation was so widespread that Jews traveled great distances to seek his assistance. He was regarded as one of the foremost Rebbes of Bukovina, combining the sacred heritage of his Ropshitz ancestors with the traditions of the Belz dynasty in whose home he had been raised. He passed away on 8 Adar 1901 and was buried in Siret, where an ohel was erected over his grave. He was succeeded as Rebbe by his son, Rabbi Pinchas Menachem Mendel Rubin of Siret.
