A Tzaddik Decrees!!! “Er Iz Bafreit” – He Is Already Free! A Dollar from the Rebbe’s Holy Hands - “Er iz bafreit [he is already free]. Good tidings.” A banknote with a face value of one U.S. dollar, given from the holy hands of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, for that special individual – a relative of the Rebbe, a descendant of the Baal HaTanya, and one of the pillars of Orthodox Jewry [his name is withheld by the auction house]. At that time, the recipient of the banknote was behind bars, after having been sentenced to lengthy years of imprisonment and a fine of tens of millions of dollars. On the banknote, the recipient inscribed the Rebbe’s wondrous words that were spoken for him: “Er iz bafreit [he is already free]. Good tidings.” The astounding uniqueness of the banknote before us lies in the Rebbe’s precise wording. The Rebbe does not bless the prisoner that he will be released, nor does he say that he “will be released soon.” His words are in the present tense, clear and unequivocal: “Er iz bafreit” – “He is already free”! And this was at a time when, in practical terms, the recipient was still sitting in prison, with the severe sentence still hanging over him. Before us, then, is a statement extraordinary in its power: even before the salvation could be seen, and while the visible reality still showed the complete opposite – the Rebbe already states it as an accomplished fact: “He is free.” Only afterward does he add: “Good tidings.” And the Words Were Fulfilled in Full Indeed, the Rebbe’s words were fulfilled in a wondrous manner. Despite the years of imprisonment imposed upon him, the recipient was released from prison after half of the prison term allotted to him, and, exceptionally, the depositors’ losses were covered by the state treasury, something that did not occur in similar cases, in which the investors’ money was lost. Thus, the inscription upon the banknote takes on a meaning of extraordinary significance. It is not a blessing formulated in the future tense, but a promise uttered while the recipient himself was still a prisoner: “Er iz bafreit” – he is already free. A Tzaddik Decrees! In Chassidic tradition, special importance has been attributed to banknotes and coins given from the hands of tzaddikim, and particularly to dollars given from the holy hand of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, which are regarded as tried and proven amulets for blessing and success. However, the banknote before us is exceptional even within the rare group of banknotes given for that same individual. On one banknote he was told, “When he is released... to freedom... soon”; on another banknote – “Good tidings for true freedom very soon”; whereas here the statement reaches its climax: there is no longer any future tense at all – “Er iz bafreit, ” he is already free! Before us is an extraordinary and stirring “proven amulet” – a dollar from the holy hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, upon which the Rebbe’s explicit declaration was inscribed: “Er iz bafreit – he is already free – good tidings.” A rare amulet of blessing, salvation, and freedom, declaring that the person is already free from all his problems, and will bring good tidings! Good condition. Upon request, a certificate attesting to the authenticity of the banknote will be provided, signed by the recipient’s son, who, like his distinguished late father, is also a descendant of the Baal HaTanya.
