Pri Chadash. Amsterdam, 1692. First Edition
Pri Chadash - important commentary on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah with the text of theֲ Shulchan Aruch, by Rabbi Chizkiyahu da Silva. First edition, printed in the author's lifetime. "Kuntress Acharon" appears in the margins of the book. The title page features drawings of angels and King David playing music.
Pri Chadash is one of the most important commentaries on the Shulchan Aruch; it is printed today as an integral part of most common editions of Shulchan Aruch, and serves as one of the fundamental books of halachic adjudication. Rabbi Chaim Ben-Attar, author of Ohr HaChaim, wrote his bookֲ Pri To'arֲ in response to the Pri Chadash's issues with the adjudicators in the Yoreh Deah section. The part before us, Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, was the only part printed in the author's lifetime.
Rabbi Chizkiyahu da Silva [1659-1698] was born in Livorno and was a disciple of R' Shmuel of Constantinople. He ascended to the Land of Israel and settled in Jerusalem, where he studied at R' Moshe Galanti's yeshivah. He was appointed an emissary and traveled far for the sake of the poor residents of the Old Yishuv. While in Amsterdam, he was urged to serve as rabbi there, and he indeed served in this position for four years. It was during this period that he published the bookֲ Pri Chadash.
