Photograph of the gaon Rabbi Eliezer Greenwald, Av Beit Din and rosh yeshivah of Satmar, author ofֲ Keren L'David. Satmar, early 20th century.
Before us is the familiar photograph of the author ofֲ Keren L'David, possibly the only one. The photograph was printed in the Keren L'David's lifetime (the description on the photograph includes the word 'shlit"a'). On the back of the photograph, there is a short letter written in Hungarian and the stamp of a photo shop in the town of Satmar, Hungary.
Theֲ gaon Rabbi Eliezer Greenwald [1867-1928], was Av Beit Din and rosh yeshivah of Satmar - the largest yeshivah in Transylvania. He was born in Cherna, Hungary, to Rabbi Amram Greenwald, son of Rabbi Yosef Greenwald, Av Beit Din of Chechnowitz. In his youth he studied under his brother, the author of Arugat HaBosem, and was considered his foremost disciple. He also studied for a short time with Rabbi Shmuel Ehrenfeld, author ofֲ Chatan Sofer. Rabbi Eliezer David served as rabbi and rosh yeshivah in: Tzhelim (presently Deutschkreutz, Austria), Ober-Visheve and Satmar. He was one of the most famous rabbinic leaders of his time, and he taught many students, including renowned rabbis and Torah scholars in Transylvania and Hungary. He is known by the name of his book series, Keren L'David.
