Proven Amulet!!! “When He Is Released to Freedom” – A Dollar from the Rebbe Sent to a Prisoner Sentenced to Many Years of Imprisonment – The Blessing Was Fulfilled in Full - “When he is released, bafreit [free], to give charity soon. Blessing and success.” A banknote with a face value of one U.S. dollar, given from the holy hands of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, for that special individual, a relative of the Rebbe and a descendant of the Baal HaTanya [his name is withheld by the auction house]. At that time, the recipient of the banknote was in prison, after having been sentenced to lengthy years of imprisonment and charged with embezzlement amounting to millions of dollars. On the banknote, the recipient recorded for that individual, prior to receiving it, the wondrous words of blessing spoken by the Rebbe when handing over the banknote: “When he is released, bafreit [free], to give charity soon. Blessing and success.” At the time these words were spoken, the man was behind bars, and according to his sentence he was expected to serve many more years of imprisonment and face charges amounting to millions of dollars. And behold, not many days passed before the Rebbe’s blessing was fulfilled in a wondrous manner: the man was released from prison after approximately half of the prison term imposed upon him, and, exceptionally, the depositors’ losses were covered by the state treasury, something that did not occur in similar cases, in which the investors’ money was lost. Of course, the segulah of the banknote is not limited to release from prison or from other problems; rather, it carries a blessing for success, with which the Rebbe blessed the banknote. The word “success” holds special significance in the language of Chassidic blessings. The blessing of “success” is regarded as a comprehensive blessing, encompassing every area of the life and activities of the person being blessed: wherever he turns and whatever he does – “success” will rest upon it. Accordingly, the Rebbe’s brief words – “blessing and success” – take on an especially broad meaning: not merely a blessing for one particular matter, but a comprehensive blessing for success in all his affairs. In Chassidic tradition, special importance has been attributed to coins and banknotes given from the hands of tzaddikim, and particularly to dollars given from the holy hand of the Rebbe, which are regarded as tried and proven amulets for blessing and success. However, the banknote before us is exceptional even among the Rebbe’s dollars: an explicit blessing for release to freedom was inscribed upon it while the recipient was still in prison – and a short time later the blessing was fulfilled in a wondrous manner. In the discussion of amulets in the Babylonian Talmud (Shabbat 61b), the concept of a “proven amulet” (kame’a mumcheh) is discussed – an amulet that has already been established as effective. In the tradition of segulot, special virtue is therefore attributed to an amulet that has already been used and through which salvations have been effected. Before us is a “proven amulet” in the fullest sense of the term: a dollar from the holy hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, sent to a man who at that very time was sitting in prison and had been sentenced to years of imprisonment and faced charges amounting to tens of millions of dollars; upon it was inscribed the Rebbe’s explicit blessing: “When he is released... to freedom... soon. Blessing and success” – and not many days passed before he was released to freedom after half the time imposed upon him and was freed from the enormous financial liability, which, as stated, was covered by the state treasury. A banknote of blessing and salvation, and “success”! Good condition. Upon request, a certificate attesting to the authenticity of the banknote will be provided, signed by the recipient’s son, who, like his distinguished late father, is also a descendant of the Baal HaTanya.
