Four Contracts from the Altona Community Beit Din, 1811-1875
4 documents: Contract signed by Rabbi Eliezer Lau, Yechiel Julius; contract signed by Rabbi Eliezer Lau, Chaim Hyman HaLevi; Heter iska, Ansbach; get signed by Rabbi Akiva Wertheimer.
* Heter iska signed by the Ansbach rabbis. Shevat 1811.
Ansbach was one of the most prominent communities in Germany. It was administered by Rabbi Moshe HaKohen Hakim-Hochheimer (1755-1835), one of the primary students of Rabbi Yosef Steinhardt, author of Zichron Yosef, and of Tzvi Hirsch Yanov, rabbi of Fürth. Due to his greatness in Torah, he was selected to serve in Fürth, a position he held from 1782-1793. He went from there to Ansbach, where he proudly served until his passing in 1835.
One of his major occupations in Ansbach was the establishment of the yeshivah there, where many dozens studied, some of whom became rabbinical leaders of the following generation. The yeshivah was administered by two lecturers: Rabbi Nota Oberdorfer and Rabbi Uri Weiner. These two signed as adjudicators on the contract, followed by the business owners. The contract is drafted in Yiddish, and many Torah bodies depended on it.

Then in 1816, he was appointed rabbi of the community in the big city, Altona. In 1819, he joined with them in their battle against the Reform movement in Hamburg, and prohibited using prayer books written in German. He was appointed chief rabbi of Altona and the surrounding region in 1823, and he served in that position until his passing in 1835.
