HaShiv Moshe, responsa on the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch, by the Admor, Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, Av Beit Din of Ujhel. Lemberg, 1866 [תרכ"ו]. First edition.
Following the title page, approbations from the Sho'el U'Meshiv and the Divrei Chaim of Sanz.
With a foreword by the author's grandson, the Admor, author of "Yitav Lev", who edited the book for print. His glosses also appear in the book, signed with the initials יי"ט.
The author, Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum of Ujhel [1759–1841], is renowned as the "Yismach Moshe", named after his famous book, though he authored many other works. A distinguished disciple of the Maggid of Kozhnitz, he was renowned for his exceptional genius. He was considered the leading Admor in Hungary and one of the greatest tzaddikim of Chassidut. A mystical kabbalist, he issued halachic responsa and wrote amulets that gained recognition worldwide in his time.
Through the influence of his son-in-law, Rabbi Eliezer Lipa, the "Aryeh D'Bei Ila'i", he traveled to the Chozeh of Lublin, where he was drawn to Chassidut. In 1808 [תקס"ח], he was appointed rabbi of Ujhel (Sátoraljaújhely) and became the first and foremost proponent of Chassidut in Hungary. His renown and righteousness were widely recognized, and even the Chatam Sofer, who maintained halachic correspondence with him, sought his blessing and prayers for his ailing son, the Ketav Sofer. His descendants include the Admorim of Sighet and Satmar.
Stefansky, Chassidut 187.
