Chiddushei HaMaharsha and Chiddushei HaMaharshal – The Personal Copy of Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies, with Handwritten Glosses
A rare and valuable volume containing Chiddushei Halachot by Rabbi Shmuel Eidels (Maharsha) and Chiddushei Maharshal (Chochmat Shlomo) by Rabbi Shlomo Luria (Maharshal)—two of the most important commentators on the Talmud.
Amsterdam, 1755 (Tav-Kuf-Tet-Vav).
Unique Layout – Two Great Commentaries in One Volume
This special edition presents both commentaries on the same page:
Maharsha's Chiddushim appear at the top of each page.
Maharshal's Chiddushim (Chochmat Shlomo) appear at the bottom of each page.
Today, these commentaries are customarily printed together in this format at the end of each tractate in standard Talmud editions. (See: Rabinovitz, Ma'amar al Hadpasat HaTalmud, pp. 118-119.)
Provenance – The Personal Copy of Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies
On the title page, the signature of Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies, inscribed:
"HaKatan Ephraim Zalman Margulies."
On folio 1, another signature appears:
"HaKatan Ephraim Zalman Margulies mi-Brod."
Additional Rabbinic-Hasidic Signature (unidentified) on the title page.
Handwritten Glosses in Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies' Own Handwriting
The noted glosses appear on:
Folio 194b (Ketzad Amud Bet)
Folio 206b (Reish Vav Amud Bet)
Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies (1761-1828) – A Giant of Halacha
Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies, author of:
Beit Ephraim (responsa),
Mateh Ephraim (laws of the High Holidays),
Shaarei Ephraim (laws of Torah reading),
Pri Tevuah, and other notable works.
A leading posek (halachic authority) of his generation, he was among the great scholars of Brody’s Kloyz, an elite study hall of prominent rabbis.
Though he was not officially affiliated with Hasidism, he was held in high esteem by Hasidic leaders, including the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. Notably, he was among those who granted semicha (rabbinic ordination) to the Divrei Chaim.
Rabbi Ephraim Zalman was also one of the endorsers of Likkutei Moharan, alongside the Chozeh of Lublin, and was given extraordinary praise in the preface:
"The renowned and celebrated gaon, famous across the world, a giant in Torah knowledge, profoundly versed in all aspects of Torah… our teacher and master, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brody…"
The Chatam Sofer, in his eulogy, described him as:
"A true giant in Torah and leadership, a perfect blend of Torah greatness and humility… He was renowned as one of the greatest scholars in the world… Our master and teacher, the chariot and horsemen of Israel, whose rulings and teachings resounded in every study hall."
