"Do not Travel in any way to Meron" - Interesting Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach

Sharp and unusual letter of warning forbidding the students at the Ma'alot HaTorah yeshivah from travelling on Lag BaOmer to the yahrtzeit at the grave site of the Rashb"i in Meron. Entirely handwritten and signed by the sacred gaon Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach. Sha'arei Chessed, Jerusalem, on the thirty-second day of the Omer [no year indicated].

"Announcement and strict warning: I hereby inform and warn the members of the yeshivah not to travel in any way to Meron, etc. and not to miss any of the yeshivah schedule, with no exception, in any way. The rosh yeshivah, Shmuel Auerbach."

The letter is especially interesting in that the gaon Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach was known as an "Ish Meron, " and for lengthy periods of his life he would travel to pray there once a month. When he would vacation in the Galilee during being hazmanim, he would pray all three daily prayers in Meron. However, there was one thing that was more important than anything else for Rabbi Shmuel, and that was the sacred Torah. Out of concern for bitul Torah he decided to write such a sharp letter about travelling to Meron, which was so significant to him.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the rosh yeshivah, Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach.

[1] leaf, 29 cm. Official stationery.
