Letter from Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook to the Minister Yitzchak Greenbaum, Among the Signatories on Israel's Declaration of Independence
"One dairy cow in Deganiah is preferable to fifty old people in the Nalewki market in Warsaw" (Greenbaum)
Important letter from the chief rabbi of the Land of Israel Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook to Yitzchak Greenbaum - one of the leaders of Zionism and later Israel's Minister of the Interior, from his tenure as head of the Jewish Agency's Aliyah Department. Jerusalem, Kislev, 1934. Sent in the last year of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook's life.
In his letter, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen pleads with Greenbaum to arrange an aliyah permit [certificate] for Ben Tziyon Zilinger, who had to leave Lithuania. Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen emphasizes that "Upon his arrival, he has a guaranteed livelihood arranged for him by his uncle, Mr. Ga'an." At the top of the letter, Greenbaum added a handwritten note to his secretary to move quickly on it: "Add [this letter] to the file ... Y. G. [Yitzchak Greenbaum]." The letter demonstrates that despite his intensely negative stigma, Greenbaum did occasionally help with aliyah.
