Nathan the Wise’. Bronze sculpture. Richard Lange. Germany, 1914
Nathan the Wise’ Bronze sculpture, marble base. Stamped by Richard Lange. Germany, 1914. Height: 24.5 cm. Width: 10 cm. Depth: 8 cm. Size of marble base: 8×8 cm. On the bottom of the sculpture there is an engraved quote from the play, as well as the name ‘Nathan Der Wise’. The artist’s name and the year 1914 are engraved by hand on the back. Richard W. Lange (1879-1944) was born in Germany, and studied art and sculpturing in Nirenberg, Berlin and Rome. He was noted for his bronze and ivori works that embodied German cultural themes. ‘Nathan the Wise’ is a German play written by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729 – 1781) in 1779. The play is a fervent plea for religious tolerance, particularly between Judaism and Christianity. The play takes place on the backdrop of the Third Crusade (1189–1192). The play is considered to be a turning point in the attitude of the German culture towards German Jewry. The character of Nathan is modeled after Lessing’s friend Moses Mendelssohn, the Jewish philosopher and founder of the Jewish Enlightenment movement.
