Large Collection of Letters and Documents from Aryeh Bauminger's Estate
Collection of hundreds of personal letters and documents from Holocaust survivor and administrative manager of Yad Vashem in the 1950s - Aryeh Bauminger.
Aryeh Bauminger [1913-2002] was a Krakow native. During WWII he escaped Polish territory and arrived in Kovno, Lithuania, where he was caught when the Nazis took control of the city, and he was taken to forced labor. However, he managed to flee and hid in the basement of a local farmer's home. From there, he escaped to the forest together with partisans. His family was almost entirely killed off in the Holocaust. After the Holocaust, Bauminger returned to Warsaw where he served as secretary to the Central Committee for Polish Jewry, and then after some time in this role, he stayed in Italy where he managed the local office of the Jewish Agency. After immigrating to Israel he became the administrative manager of the Yad Vashem museum and dealt extensively with collecting the names of the victims and with the perpetuation of Krakow Jewry.
These are hundreds of letters and personal documents, most from the early 1940s to the mid 1950s: letters on political topics, the future of the Jewish people, and the Land of Israel - between him and his friends, letters he wrote while serving in the Jewish Agency office in Italy in the 40s, letters on the topic of his research about documentation of Holocaust events and the fate of the Jews in his native Krakow, postcards, letters between him and his wife in the 40s and early 50s, letters from various periods between him and his friends, telegrams sent from Italy, letters he wrote during the War of Independence and more.
The envelopes in the which the letters were sent are included. Most of the letters are in Hebrew, the rest in various languages.
The collection has not been thoroughly examined. Various conditions. Overall fine condition.
