Rare Letter [27 words] Handwritten by the Imrei Emet of Gur

Rare letter, entirely [27 words] handwritten and signed by the leading Admo"r of his generation, Rosh Golat Ariel, the Admo"r Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter, author of Imrei Emet of Gur. [Poland], Tuesday of parashat Korach. Date and location not indicated.

The letter is addressed to the rebbe's relative, one of his closest associates, the Chassid Rabbi Meir Yoskowitz [see attached pictures], son-in-law of the author of Siftei Tzaddik of Piltz, and brother of the Chassid Rabbi Shlomo Yoskowitz, son-in-law of the Imrei Emet. The letter is mysterious and inaccessible, as was the Imrei Emet's style, to be very brief with his words, both spoken and written. The Imrei Emet relates in the letter to R' Yoskowitz that he is sending 400 (zloty?) "I would ask that you use this to pay Landau, and send me the note." [He may be referring to the Gur naggid Rabbi Shaul Landau; refer to Rosh Golat Ariel Part II, pp. 435-439].

It is interesting to note the changed date of the letter, as at the beginning of the letter, the rebbe writes Tuesday of parashat Shlach, and then, the Rebbe wrote the parashah of the next week, Korach. [This is the type of thing that can only be seen in an original letter.]

Manuscripts by gedolei hadorot - especially their signatures - are known to have been used as tried-and-true amulets. How much more so this manuscript - handwritten and signed by the tzaddik hador, with segulah content as well, in which the rebbe "sends" a sum of money to his follower: "[enclosed] are 400." The rebbe also mentions in his letter the word kvittel which, to Chassidim, means a note for salvation [although in this case, it appears the Rebbe is referring to a receipt for the money]. The sacred rebbe of Gur, whose word never went unfulfilled, concludes his letter with a blessing, and with his signature: "Seeking your welfare and goodness - Avraham Mordechai Alter."

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the Admo"r Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter.
