Letter with Lyrical Blessings from the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Berlin to the Av Beit Din of Antapoli

May Hashem's grace be upon you

To place blessings on your homes

May Hashem reward you for your efforts

And may your payment be full

A man according to his blessing

Will be repaid in kind

In line with his actions

To benefit him his entire life

As his heart desires

And like a single soul bound in love

And with blessings for the holiday

From one who is very busy

And awaiting the upcoming redemption

Beautiful letter with blessings (rhyming in the original) handwritten and signed by the gaon hador Rabbi Chaim Berlin, av beit din of Moscow and Jerusalem, son of the Netzi"v of Volozhin, and his successor as rosh yeshivah of Volozhin. Kobrin, 1895. The letter is from Rabbi Chaim Berlin's short tenure as av beit din of Kobrin after he left Volozhin upon the closure of the mother of the yeshivahs, at whose helm he stood.

This letter was sent on the eve of Shavuot to the donors from Antapoli, led by his relative, the gaon Rabbi Yosef David Rushkin, av beit din of Antapoli. In this letter, written in a lyrical, rhyming style, the gaon Rabbi Chaim Berlin expresses his appreciation to the residents of Antapoli and their rabbi for sending funds to support poverty-stricken Torah scholars.

This letter demonstrates the love of Torah that resided deep within the Lithuanian ba'alei batim, who sent Rabbi Chaim Berlin their last pennies [alongside special donations from gvirim]. With the love of Torah that burned in them, they added even more, sending  "baked goods and bread to eat" from Antapoli  to the poor of Kobrin.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi Chaim Berlin and the addressee, the gaon Rabbi Yosef David Rashkin.

The addressee's name appears on the reverse side: The honorable rabbi and gaon ... Yosef David Rushkin of Antapoli.
