Beautiful Letter from "HaYeshivah HaRamah" with a Handwritten Addition by Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald, Av Beit Din and Rosh Yeshivah of Chust

Especially beautiful letter from the renowned yeshivah in Chust - one of Hungarian Jewry's largest yeshivahs, and from the rosh yeshivah, Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald, av beit din of Chust. The letter is typewritten with an important addition in the rosh yeshivah's penmanship, and with his signature and stamp. Chust, 1939.

The letter was sent to Rabbi Ephraim Epstein, head of the Vaad Tomchei Yeshivot of Chicago. Alongside the yeshivah's difficult financial situation, the letter describes the ancient yeshivah's virtues. Rabbi Greenwald's yeshivah became one of Hungarian Jewry's largest yeshivahs under his leadership. Students flocked to it from all over Hungary and even from the United States.

The gaon of Chust notes as follows in the margins of the letter, along with blessings: "Signed with a heart broken yet full of anticipation of Heavenly mercy speedily for the entire Jewish people." That the Holocaust was already underway in Europe is palpable here, along with its giant strides towards Hungary. This subject appears more extensively in the Ein Dim'ah compilation at the end of his sefer, Shu"t Chessed Yehoshua.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Greenwald.
