Mishnayot Seder Zeraim with the Ramba"m's Commentary. Constantinople, 1583
Mishnayot Seder Zeraim with the Ramba"m's commentary and that of Rabbeinu Shimshon of Shantz. References in poskim (to the Rambam's rulings) in Seder Zera'im, printed here for the first time. Constantinople, Yosef Ya'avetz Press. C. 1583. Lacking the title page.
Remnant of this rare edition of Talmudic tractates printed by the Ya'ave"tz brothers, after the burning of the Talmud in Italy. Due to the lack in Talmudic tractates, in order to fill the lack, they took upon themselves to reprint Sha"s. However, they did not have the privilege of completing printing all the tractates. This is the second volume of the Constantinople edition, printed 1583-1595. For more about this important edition, refer to: Ma'amar al Hadpassat HaTalmud by Rabbi Nattan Nota Rabinowitz, Jerusalem, 1952, pp 70-74. Ya'ari, HaDefus HaIvri B'Kushta, p. 57 and pp. 131-137. Refer also to: Areshet V, 1972, p. 470.
This edition of Sha"s was printed in parts distributed weekly to subscribers who undertook the obligation to purchase the entire edition. This arrangement was made in order to manage the cost of the printing. The introduction to the first part describes the method of selling: "Each Shabbat we brought tractates from this Sha"s and distributed them ... the payment for the parts will take place [the following week], in such a way that, b'ezrat Hashem, each one will have a complete Sha"s within a short time, for which he paid a little at a time in a way that is easy and not too burdensome. We expect, according to the number of leaves, that the total cost will be 25 florins." This type of selling also explains the lack of complete volumes of this edition.
