Rare Document: Letter of Recommendation for Printing Rabbi Mordechai Luria's Sefer, Signed by Rabbis of Tiberias and Ashkenaz

Beautiful, rare and important letter of recommendation to come to the assistance of Rabbi Mordechai Luria of Tiberias for printing his sefer, Knesset Mordechai. Signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Tzvi HaLevi,  av beit din of Tiberias, with additional signatures from other rabbis. [Land of Israel and Germany, c. 1880].

This document in fact took a number of trips - from the Land of Israel to Germany, and from Germany back to the Land of Israel. The names of the signatories on this letter who gave financial advances to the author for when the sefer would be published are as follows:.

  • Rabbi Avigdor Zelig Auerbach, av beit din of Halberstadt
  • Rabbi Dov Aryeh Ritter, av beit din of Rotterdam
  • Rabbi Asher Lemmel Marks, av beit din of Darmstadt
  • Rabbi Nachum Brill of Frankfurt am Main
  • Rabbi Aryeh Schwartz, av beit din of Karlsruhe
  • Rabbi Gavriel Winter, av beit din of Dresden
  • Rabbi David Shlomo Galatz
  • Rabbi Sinai Schiffer, rabbi of Kehillot Yere'im in Karlsruhe

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the gaon Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Hirsch HaLevi Segal, Rabbi Sinai b"r Yekutiel Ze'ev Schiffer and Rabbi Aryeh Schwartz, av beit din of Karlsruhe.

The sefer Knesset Mordechai, subject of this letter, was published in 1886 in Jerusalem at Shmuel Zuckerman's press. It is such a rare sefer that it does not appear in the Torah databases HebrewBooks and Otzar HaChochmah.

[1] leaf 22x28 cm.The body of the letter was written in beautiful scribal script with the rabbis' signatures underneath.

Moderate-fine condition. Aging stains. Fold marks. Light tears in the folds with tiny blemishes in the text.
